The Story of Legacy Recordings

My beloved grandpa Norman

About 25 years ago, I gave my grandpa Norman an old hand-held tape recorder leftover from my journalism school days. “Tell me about the farm,” I said to him. “Tell me about the war and how you met grandma and stuff…” Over the course of a few weeks, he talked about life on the farm in small-town Kansas.  He told stories about taking his pet horse into his one-room schoolhouse. He talked about hunting and trapping raccoons and he talked about the war. We lost him in 2001. And when I finally listened to that 26-minute cassette, I laughed and smiled and I cried. A couple of years ago, I started volunteering for a local hospice organization to record the oral histories of people nearing the end of their journey. I bought professional equipment. I got better at it. I recorded Scott’s mom for Christmas this year as a surprise for his family for the holidays. I’ve learned so many things since I handed grandpa that small Dictaphone. But most importantly, I am reminded that we ALL have a story to tell.

“Dana, I love you so much and such a fan! Sitting here crying. I was the first grandchild as she told you in the recording and spent many weekends at granny and Papa’s house growing up. It’s only been 2 years since we lost him and it still hurts and we wish we could’ve done this with him. Thank you so much. Thank you again and again. I will always be a fan of you guys!”  –  Zac, Arkansas

“THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!  I haven’t heard my grandma so animated in years!  She has LOVED the process of speaking with you.  Thank you, again, Dana.  You are truly doing important, impactful, meaningful work.  I appreciate you!  –  Megan, Overland Park

“I was so excited to hear the Legacy Recording of our grandmother. I shed tears of joy! I can’t thank Dana enough. This is amazing. I wanted to hear it first and it is beautiful. My grandma is one hell of a woman. She is the glue that binds our family together. Thanks so much for this!!!  –  Brandi, Topeka Kansas

An effortless process, Dana guided me to memories I thought I’d long put away. Through a series of questions and answers, I was able to tap into the joy and sadness of events that make our family history.  I’m not sure which part of the afternoon I enjoyed more, remembering the highlights or hearing them in my own words. It’s uniquely our story, to be shared with the entire family.  –  Cathy, Leawood
